To mark the opening of the 29th edition of the Gran Paradiso Film Festival, “Per aspera ad astra” will be unveiled – the new work by Donato Savin which completes and makes permanent “La vita attorno a me”, the widespread, open-air exhibition project conceived by the Fondation Grand Paradis. A widespread exhibition spanning the diverse territory of Cogne and inviting the public to discover the village through an artistic journey immersed in the landscape, amidst nature, memory and identity. The works, distributed across symbolic locations, form a collective narrative composed of animal figures and archetypal forms: the Valnontey Stele, a silent and sacred presence; the Tchitchic, small birds moved by the wind; the Betèn de Féye, a flock of sheep born from the stones washed up by the flood; the Bouquetin, the ibex that inspired the Stambecco d’Oro; Deveteya, a tribute to rural culture; and the Motsè di-z-agnì, dedicated to the bearded vulture. At the heart of this new permanent installation is ‘Per aspera ad astra’, situated in the central square of Cogne: a tree made of steel and magnetite that sinks its roots into the community’s mining heritage and soars towards the sky as a symbol of resilience and rebirth. The hearts nestled among its branches bear the mark of loss and, at the same time, a yearning for the future, transforming the material into a gesture of shared hope.

Barbara Tutino’s exhibition unfolds as a pictorial journey inspired by the Canticle of the Creatures, offering, through images and materials, a profound reflection on the relationship between humankind and nature. In line with the theme “Dominion and Coexistence”, which runs through this edition of the Festival, questioning the fragile balance between power and coexistence, St Francis emerges as a radical and revolutionary figure, who remains extraordinarily relevant today: the embodiment of a worldview founded not on dominion but on relationship, not on possession but on stewardship. Arranged around his effigy are large, free-standing canvases that convey the cosmic scope of the Canticle, whilst Emo Broccard’s wooden sculptures further expand and ground this narrative of Creation.

The exhibition, organised by the Italian Bird Protection League to mark the association’s 60th anniversary, is dedicated to endangered birds and the need to take action – at the planning, political and cultural levels – to provide them with adequate protection. The exhibition comprises photographs of several species in sharp decline – chosen as examples from among many – and a series of posters featuring scientific data
and graphs that illustrate the conservation challenges. The exhibition also presents significant success stories and a range of best practices (as opposed to bad practices) that must be implemented in order to save these wonders that are wild birds and ensure their long-term protection.
